Even with comprehensive coverage from your primary medical plan, you will still have some out-of-pocket expenses if you get critically ill, are seriously injured, or need to be hospitalized. Voluntary Benefits offers additional protection to help you cover costs that arise in these situations. These benefit options are managed by MetLife.

Overview

These plans provide additional coverage for accidents and illnesses and are an economical way to supplement your healthcare and disability plans. You can choose to cover yourself, your spouse and your children. In the event of a covered illness or accident, benefit payments are made directly to you to be used as you see fit. Use the benefit payments to cover your out-of-pocket medical expenses, disability expenses or to pay for your every day living expenses — such as your mortgage, car payments, or child care.

Complete plan details and individualized rates will be reflected in the Benefits' portal as you process your elections.

Keep in mind

On their own, supplemental medical plans don’t provide comprehensive medical coverage for your day-to-day health care needs. Rather, they’re intended to supplement the coverage provided by your primary medical plan.

Critical Illness

Critical Illness coverage protects against the financial impact of certain serious illnesses, as well as other conditions such as cardiac arrest, severe burns, COVID-19, and specific childhood diseases. If you experience a covered illness, you receive a lump-sum benefit payment to help cover out-of-pocket expenses for your treatment that are not covered by your medical plan. You also can use the money to take care of other expenses, such as housekeeping services, special transportation, and child care.

Choose from two benefit coverage options:

  • High Plan — $30,000
  • Low Plan — $15,000

Benefits are paid:

  • Directly to you, unless assigned to someone else
  • Up to twice per year

In the event you or your family member suffer more than one covered condition, the total benefit available is 3 times your initial benefit ($45,000 low plan or $90,000 high plan).

  • In addition to any other coverage, like your primary medical plan or an Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) plan

You receive a cash benefit up to a specific amount for:

  • Fractures
  • Dislocation or fracture
  • 2nd & 3rd degree burns
  • Concussions
  • Eye injuries
  • Emergency care

Typically, a flat amount is paid for any admission and a daily amount is paid for each day of a hospital stay.
